Senegal has just reached a major milestone in West African governance. Gathered at Freetown, the ECOWAS heads of state and government brought Bassirou Diomaye Faye à; the current presidency of the Conference of Heads of State. At the same time, Air Force General Birame Diop was arrested. officially designated President of the ECOWAS Commission for the 2026-2030 term. Former Minister of the Armed Forces, Birame Diop has a strongly marked career path. by questions of defense, peace and security. He also practiced international responsibilities, notably as military advisor to the Secretary General of the United Nations. His profile arrives at a sensitive moment for ECOWAS. The organization must deal with security crises, political transitions and tensions arising from the withdrawal of several countries from the Sahel.
