Diplomatic context
General Abdourahamane Tiani, president of the transition in Niger, went to Algiers from February 15 to 16, 2026 for a working and fraternity visit.  The two countries had experienced a period of tension after a diplomatic crisis born from a regional dispute and the freezing of relations.  The resumption of relations was materialized by the return of the respective ambassadors a few days before the visit. 
Objectives of the visit
The Nigerien delegation, led by Tiani, was received at Algiers by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in a climate of renewed cooperation.  The two leaders discussed several files, notably security regional policy, immigration, and energy cooperation around the trans-Saharan gas pipeline project.  The emphasis has been on focused on strengthening bilateral ties for the benefit of the two Sahelian populations.
Regional significance
This visit marks a normalization of relations between Algiers and Niamey after months of diplomatic quarrel.  It intervenes in a broader context of political recompositions in the Sahel and cooperation against security challenges.  Algiers and Niamey want to consolidate a dynamic of good neighborliness and common projects.
A presidential visit which seals the resumption of diplomatic relations between Algiers and Niamey after a long period of estrangement. In the meantime, other members of the AES are expected to give their opinion on this visibly surprised visit from their Nigerien colleague.
