A symbolic and unique visit

Captain Ibrahim Traoré went on April 22, 2026 to the Baporo agricultural penitentiary center. A rare approach for a serving head of state. This visit is part of a desire to to directly observe the conditions of detention and to convey a strong political message. During this visit, Ibrahim Traoré clearly stated his position: « the prison must be humane. It insists on respect for the fundamental rights of prisoners, whatever their situation. This approach breaks with a purely punitive logic to introduce a more social and human dimension.

A prison reform centered on dignity

Burkina Faso is undertaking a gradual transformation of its prison system under the leadership of Ibrahim Traoré The principle is clear: put humans back at the center of detention. The head of state defends a less punitive approach and more oriented towards respect for fundamental rights. This vision is part of a desire to break with classic prison models.

The agricultural prison model

At the heart of the reforms, the development of agricultural penitentiary centers, such as that of Baporo. The detainees participate in it. production activities, particularly agricultural and pastoral. This system allows you to both to occupy the detainees, to contribute to local economy and provide them with useful skills. In 2025, these centers already have generated several hundred tons of agricultural production.
